God of Sun - Surya Bhagawan

For Hindus whomever are born with the numeric one or total numeric is one is under the influence of the God of Sun. God Sun or Surya Bhagawan is actually the head or the leader of the nine planets that controls or influence one's life until he rest in peace. As my date of birth is 19 which brings the total to 10 which means i am number One thus i am under the Main influence of the Sun God. I say main because although he is my main Principle, other planets also has influence over my course of life. Thus by praying to my principle, he would then persuade other planetary God's to show mercy and bless me with good health, fortune and allow me to lead a happy life even with pain, suffering, crisis, misfortune, worries and bad times.

There are no temples in Malaysia that is specially built for him, but you can go to the temples that has the Nine Navagrahas and his place is right in the middle most likely in red attire. 

Now for some historical background for those who wishes to know him better. He has a temple for himself in India. It is in town of Kumbakonam in the district of Thanjavur. To be exact it is about 15km from Kumbakonam , 3kms from Aaduthurai of the kumbakonam - mayiladudurai road and 30kms from Mayiladudurai.

THE TEMPLE

As you above on the picture, that is the entrace for his temple in Aaduthurai. The tower of the temple is 15.5 Metre in height and consist of 3 tier.At the top of the tower are 5 domes. To the north of the Main Tower (Rajagopuram) lies the sacred bathing pool (ghat) called "surya pushkarni". It is important that one whould bath in the pool before going to offer prayers to the Lord or the least sprinkle the water onto his head. 

Its believed that the temple was built in 1100 AD by the King Kulothanga Chola.  Every year in the month of January (mid); there will be a harvest festival celebrated and it would be big occasion celebrated in this temple. 

The Main deity of the temple is Lord Siva under the name of Kasi Vishanathar and Sree Visalakshi Ammaiyar. It is said that the great Thirugnana sambadar sang the praise of Lord Siva in this temple. This is the only temple where you will find all the other eight navagrahas together with the main one. 

THE MAN

Suryan is the son of Sage Kashyap and Adhithi and was the grandson of Sage Maharishi. He is said to be born from the Omkara Naadham. Surya is married to Soorvasala/Sanjana (usha devi) the daughter of Sage Vishwakarma and Parathyusha (Chaaya devi).After Marrying Surya, she found that she could not stand or bear the power of the ray of Surya.She proceeds to make an image of her ownand gave life to it and left it with Surya.

He has 2 sons and a daughter of Sanjana. His sons are Vaivasvatha Manu - The Law Giver and Yamadharmarajan - The Lord Of Death and his daughter is Yamuna - The River.

It is also said that Karna is his illegitimate child born to Kunti Devi (Mother of the Pandavas).

Sugriva is also his son, the chief of the Monkey Kingdom who was the ally for Lord Rama.

Background

In Vedic Astrology, Sun is also called RAVI. He is known as Atmakaraka which means Soul Indicator. As the indicator of soul, he is a life giver. He is also the indicator of Father, Our Ego, Honors,Status,Fame,The Heart, The Eyes,Vitality , Respect and Power.

Suryan's nature and temprement is fiery or is called PITTA. He is a living God as all can see him and pray to to him for blessings. Though he is visible, he has been known in variety of forms. He is a life giver and time giver. The is mainly adored as witness for all ations. (Suryan Satchi). 

The most celebrated Mantra Known as the Gayathri Mantra, is the incantation addressed to Surya.Many forms of meditations, prayers and rituals is used in the daily ceremonies of Hindu's are addressed to Surya. SURYANAMASKAR is seen daily in the morning by all Hindu's who seeks his blessing. This is done with offering water to the Sun, accompanied with the chanting of his Mantra. 

The lords vehicle is called saptha vahanam (one wheeled chariot with 7 seven horses).Must be mentioned that the seven horses are in seven different colours. His Chariots riders name is Aruna. Aruna is the wise elder brother of Garuda. Aruna stands infront of Lord Surya on the chariot and its his strong body and his vast body is the one that shelters the world from Suryan direct fury. As the cheif / head of the grahas, he appears with lotus in his hands.He blesses his devotees with good health, fame and efficient management.  

His Legends.

Some 300 years ago, a learned hindu man who was suffering from leprosy prayed to Lord Surya for cure. One night is his sleep, he was inspired to write eight verses in Sanskrit knowns as Suryashtak.(Surya Ashtakam) The man began to write the verses with much difficulty and by the time he finished writing the last verse, he was restored back to his health. 

Surya Ashtakam

Adhi deva Namasthubhyam,
Praseeda mama Bhaskara,
Divakara namasthubhyam,
Prabha kara Namosthu they.

{Salutations to the primeval God,Please be kind to me,he who creates the morning.Salutations to you the creator of day,Salutations to you the creator of light}.

Saptha aswa radha roodam,
Prachandam, Kasypathmajam,
Swetha padma dharma devam,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham

{My salutations to the Sun God,Who rides on a chariot with seven horses,Who is the brightest of lights,Who is the son of Sage Kashyapa, and one whom wears the white lotus flower}

Lohitham Radha maroodam,
Sarva loka pithamaham,
Maha papa haram devam,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham 

{My salutations to the Sun God,Who is reddish brown in colour,Who rides on a chariot,Who has created all the worlds,and one whom is the god who kills all the sins}

Trigunyam cha maha sooram,
Brahma Vishnu maheswaram,
Maha papaharam devam,

Bramhitham teja punjam cha,
Vayu makasa meva cha,

{My salutations to the Sun God,Who developed by the sparkling of air , fire and ether,And who is the lord of all universe}

Bandhooka pushpa sankaasam,
Hara kundala bhooshitham,
Eka chakra dharma devam ,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham 

{My salutations to the Sun God,Who is as red as the hibiscus flower,Who wears ornaments of garlands and ear rings,and one whom is the god who has one great Wheel}

Viswesam Viswa karthaaram,
Maha Theja pradheepanam,
Maha papa haram devam,
Tham suryam pranamamyaham 

{My salutations to the Sun God,Who is the Lord of all universe,Who created all the universe,And who is the God who can destroy all sins}

{My salutations to the Sun God,Who is the lord of peace,Who is the Lord of this world,Who showers on us knowledge, science and salvation,And who is the God who can destoy all sins.}
